Environmental management for the automotive industry

"We want to expand our core competence throughout Europe"
(Meldung vom 09. August 2006)

Partslife is the No. 1 contact in Germany when it comes to returning industry-specific waste to the reutilisation or disposal cycle. The Langen-based company has acquired extensive expertise over the years and in future wants to apply it in other European countries as well. However, one thing will remain the same - the focus will continue to be on the company´s core competence, the automotive industry. Partslife´s Managing Director, Wolfgang Steube, answered a variety of questions on the occasion of the forthcoming automechanika.

?: Mr. Steube, you have been Managing Director at Partslife since 1.7.2005. How has business in Germany developed under your management to date?
Steube: Our business has developed very positively, ever since Partslife has existed and also in recent times. However, that´s not my single-handed achievement, but that of a dedicated and competent team.

?: It has always been an aim of Partslife to take up activities abroad in Europe as well. To what extent have these plans been realised?
Steube: Partslife was originally established as a national industry solution. However, since we no longer have to deal with national law today, but with EU law, we can see some great opportunities for mustering up all the expertise we have acquired in Germany in relation to environmental legislation and regulations, and transferring it to other European countries. So, our work on setting up a comparable industry solution in other European countries is running at full steam.

?: Which particular problems does the company have to battle with abroad?
Steube: Needless to say, we always have to come to terms with the special features of each nation - particularly meaning the specific laws of the individual countries. Moreover, we have to take the different mentality and the existing structures into account. Fortunately, that´s not an unsolvable problem, and it certainly makes for an interesting challenge!

?: Which countries do you have on your agenda?
Steube: We´re currently making a start with Austria, and our list of priorities also includes Great Britain, Poland, Hungary and Romania.

?: Back to Germany: how are industry, dealers and workshops currently responding to Partslife´s services?
Steube: As a result of offering further attractive services for industry, dealers and workshops, we are being flooded with enquiries and contracts at the moment. Owing to intensive communication with our partners, and thanks to the great support of the regional and national trade press, the attention of all market players is increasingly focusing on Partslife and its topics and offers.

?: Must we expect further tightening of environmental legislation in the foreseeable future that will particularly impact your potential customers?
Steube: In our sphere of work, we are generally expecting the existing laws to be harmonised at the EU level. Consequently, we expect equal opportunities in every country in Europe. Because of the rapidly increasing scarcity of resources, we must naturally also reckon with tighter environmental legislation.

?: The world´s largest trade fair for the automotive industry, automechanika, is just around the corner. What expectations do you have of the show?
Steube: We introduce ourselves to all target groups at the show – industry, dealers and workshops – and present our service offering. Competent contacts will be on the stand every day during the trade fair to face the questions of professional visitors. Of course, we will also use the show as an opportunity to make contact with companies that we see as potential partners. We expect to attract substantial numbers of visitors as a result of the activities we have planned for the event. It was not least with this in mind that we developed a new stand concept with an open design that invites people to pay a visit, talk to us, or simply spend some time there.

?: What special items will you be offering your customers at automechanika?
Steube: In addition to all the relevant information on our complete service package, we will be offering visitors to our new exhibition stand an attractive prize competition.

?: All your current business connections in the partnership field are in the automotive industry. When will Partslife start to canvass other industrial sectors?
Steube: We choose to operate in this niche and will continue to do so. After all, it is where our core competence lies, and our functioning networks exist there. However, in addition to the classical wear parts, we will also turn our attention to partners in the fields of accessories and tools. There are no plans to expand Partslife´s business activities to other industrial sectors.

?: How dense is your network of partnerships in Germany at the moment? Can even the smallest of workshops benefit from it?
Steube: We currently have agreements with roughly 7, 000, mainly independent workshops in Germany, and the trend is rising rapidly. In addition, we have a nationwide disposal network in Germany with disposal companies at more than 100 locations. So, virtually every workshop can enjoy the benefits of inexpensive, simple disposal in compliance with the law.

?: Who is currently your greatest competitor in Germany?
Steube: Let me answer that question like this: Partslife is backed by 64 powerful brands from the automotive industry. As the provider of a comprehensive industry solution, we cooperate with almost all workshop systems. In addition, we offer an extensive range of services for complying with laws and regulations. On top of that, we help our partners cut waste disposal costs. To the best of my knowledge, no other company is in a position to offer such a range of services, and particularly not one that is exactly tailored to a specific industry.

?: In times when such great emphasis is placed on environmental protection, there ought to be an overwhelming interest in Partslife – is that the case?
Steube: Generally speaking, we certainly can´t complain about a lack of work at the moment. But we, too, still need to stay on the ball, and we must succeed in making the subject even more attractive in order to gain greater attention. At the same time, our efforts are also geared to offering our partners even more attractive and effective support.

?: Mr. Steube, thank you for those informative answers!
